Day 2 - Professional Organizers' "Simple" Steps

Equalize your space? What does that mean???  (photo source)
Professional organizers make it sound so easy, don’t they? One article I read made me laugh out loud:

4 Simple Steps to an Organized Closet
Step 1. Purge.
Step 2. Sort and Design.
Step 3. Get Matching Hangers.
Step 4. Keep it Organized.

Yeah, right. That makes it all easy-peasy.

Where do you get stuck organizing your clothes? If you’re anything like me, you get stuck on the purge and sort bit. You dump all your clothes on your bed and work your way halfway through them before bedtime. Then you stuff everything back in your closet and give up on getting organized until you feel guilty enough to try again.

Sound familiar?

Sorting clothes takes time. It takes careful thought. It’s often an emotionally and mentally draining chore. My rule of thumb: take it slowly and work in very small sections. Give yourself as much time and space as you need to make decisions. If something is too hard to decide right then, set it aside. Come back to it later with a different perspective.

You may not be completely organized at the end of this 31 days series. That's OK. Professional organizers make a living promising quick results, but like crash dieting, their results often don't survive the demands of real life. My hope is that you will walk away from this series with a few ideas that that give you long-term success over your dress mess.

And please don’t feel like you have try every single idea in this series. Everybody is different and different things work for different people. These are only meant to inspire you to think about how you can take better care of your own clothes.

What’s your worst nightmare, your greatest fear, about organizing your clothes? Where do you tend to get stuck in organizing?
